There are no clubs in your bag where a solid, straight hit is more important than your wedges. How you use your wedges is a fitting consideration in their total and dynamic weight. A golfer that uses a lot of partial swings often finds it easier to maintain good rhythm with dynamically heavier wedges.
Wedge weight can be adjusted with both the head and the shaft weight. Your tempo and swing style should be matched to the overall weight and dynamic weight of your wedges.
Grooves on a club with more than 25 degrees of loft are regulated by the USGA. The latest revision to these rules go into effect in U.S Open tournament play starting January 1, 2010. All other USGA recognized competition must conform on January 1, 2014.
The new ruling applies to edges and spacing. It recognizes the importance of edge condition in creating spin. If you are playing worn wedges like the one shown left, the rule does really apply to you. But if you want your wedges to make the ball spin, you will do what the pros do and change the heads often.
